Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Beagles, but Were Afraid to Ask...
Thanks for stopping by our site, our rescue hopes to educate people about Beagles, one of the most delightful hound breeds. If you are considering this breed please research it as much as you can before committing to 16 to 17 years of care. We are however, not a good site to find information if you are looking for a beagle for hunting only. This is for people that want to add a Beagle to their family as a pet.
Beagles are known as ‘the merry little hound’ because of their wonderful dispositions and smaller size. They are also referred to as the clown of the breeds at many dog shows. They love to play and often just get a burst of what I refer to as ‘Beagle energy’ and their need to have a good size, well fenced yard to run around and be Beagles. Even though most of the time your Beagle will want to be right beside you or at the very least close by where they can keep an eye on you. All dogs are pack animals, but they are extreme pack dogs. Their family and other dogs in the family become their pack and they tend to be very loyal and love them deeply. Therefore, they suffer greatly when they lose their homes, or families. I have rescued Beagles and mixes that have cried and howled so incredibly sad that I can still hear that haunting sound. It is because of this, I plead with you to make sure that you not only want a Beagle because they are so cute and popular. They are a scent hound that have specific breed needs such as being kept as an indoor family member that has access to a yard to play in and be the Beagle that they are. Most love to play with toys and delight in getting new ones regularly. All dogs love to chew, so safe chewies are important too. Freeze a wet wash rag for teething puppies... they especially love it in the summertime!
A busy beagle is a happy beagle, and if you want to give them the ultimate treat... take them for a walk or hike, (on a leash). They need to take pleasure walks where they can put their noses to the ground as much as possible. I know that you may want a dog that ‘heels ‘ perfectly, but there’s a time that you need to let them to be the incredible scenting hounds that they were born to be. Please do not get this breed and take their scenting abilities from them, or think that they are going to be like a poodle or other medium sized dogs. Beagles are Beagles and they need you to understand that it is part of the package at least most of the time to scent and inspect you and many things that you bring into their home.
Many Beagles train very well and have their AKC Good Citizen Award in advanced training and even advance nicely in agility training. Keeping in mind that they need gentle, loving training with a firm voice and respond well to treat training.
Beagles are a popular and beautiful breed. Beagles are hunters by instinct. However, they are also very adaptable dogs and are able to adjust perfectly to family life providing they receive plenty of care, love and exercise. These determined animals have steady temperaments and are eager to please. They are very friendly and playful, with bags of stamina and personable dispositions. Beagles can make excellent and devoted pets and companions, and are both lively and intelligent. Moreover, they are very hygienic dogs that like to keep themselves and their surrounding clean. Beagles are thought to be one of the oldest hounds in history, with ancestry so old that it is largely unknown. What is known, however, is that they were bred and used as hunters and trackers. Although the hunting and tracking instinct is still evident in most beagles to this day, these lively animals are popular as not only hunting dogs but as show prospects and make wonderful family members.
